Utah Valley University: BS in Forensic Science and a Minor in Criminal Justice
What do you do in your job?
I process and perform serological testing (semen, saliva, blood, and touch DNA) for sexual assault, homicide, and property crime cases.
What motivated you to choose a career in forensics, and what keeps you motivated now?
I love being able to help victims and their families get closure when something so tragic has happened in their lives. This still motivates me today, but what’s really rewarding is to have a name sitting on my desk (while still being unbiased) and to know in some way I was able to help this person.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Giving back: being of service to others!
What do you envision for the future vis-à-vis forensics?
Suspects being too scared to commit a crime because the technology is so advanced, even though we’d all be out of a job. But we can dream, right? On a serious note: I truly hope with the immense backlog of sexual-assault cases finally coming to light that the public will be more aware of how often this crime does happen. I also hope they’ll be more proactive about rape-prevention as well as helping victims get through what has happened to them.
What advice would you give to a young woman considering a career in forensics?
If you’re interested and have a passion for this field, or any field, GO FOR IT! Be bold, be kind, and be passionate. Passion is what motivates. Most importantly, stand your ground and don’t be afraid of what others may think—this is your life and your career!
