Since the spring of 2016, Sorenson Forensics, one of the world’s top private DNA labs, has been assisting in a hair-protein human-identification study led by scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A paper about this study was released on September 7 in the PLOS ONE online scientific journal and immediately claimed worldwide attention and extensive press.
How Sorenson Forensics helped
Sorenson scientists were responsible for screening and collecting samples from volunteers across a wide spectrum of races and genetic origins. In addition, other scientists from Sorenson Forensics have tested and analyzed blood samples for further research associated with this study.
How important for forensics was this study and accompanying research?
A Newswise article says: “In an important breakthrough for the forensic science community, researchers have developed the first-ever biological identification method that exploits the information encoded in proteins of human hair.” It is very possible that, in the future, hair-protein analysis may serve as a valuable supplement to DNA testing.
Sorenson Forensics is honored to have an ongoing role in this study.
