CODIS Services
The Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) is the standard national platform used for uploading DNA profiles, such as short tandem repeat (STR) data, for search. Several databases are available for profile comparisons, including those for crime scenes, convicted offenders, and missing persons.
CODIS is especially valuable when no suspect has been identified. If a DNA profile obtained from a crime scene meets CODIS eligibility, it can be uploaded and searched for potential matches, helping to identify persons of interest or link cases.
Which Labs Can Facilitate CODIS Uploads?
Government labs, such as state and county forensic DNA labs, generally have access to CODIS. These NDIS-participating (National DNA Index System) labs have met the requirements for participation and can upload DNA profiles for search. They can also receive notifications about hits where potential matches have been made to profiles in a database.
Sorenson Forensics has existing partnerships with NDIS-participating labs authorized for CODIS upload. These NDIS-participating labs have vetted and pre-authorized Sorenson Forensics based on our proven quality and compliance with the FBI’s Quality Assurance Standards. Each profile we submit for CODIS consideration meets the necessary legal and technical requirements.
When a case is submitted to Sorenson Forensics:
- You work directly with us from start to finish.
- Prior to testing, Sorenson Forensics obtains CODIS pre-approval, tests the DNA to create a suitable DNA profile eligible for CODIS upload and reports any CODIS hits directly to the client.
Public or government labs often face significant backlogs. With Sorenson Forensics, you can get expedited turnaround times for forensic DNA testing without sacrificing access to CODIS.
What Types of Cases or Profiles Are Eligible for CODIS Upload?
Not every DNA profile qualifies for upload to CODIS. There are specific conditions that need to be met for a profile to be accepted for search. At Sorenson Forensics, our team can evaluate your case and guide you on whether a profile meets CODIS eligibility.
Here’s a general outline of what may be eligible:
- UHR (unidentified human remains), if approved by NDIS-participating lab
- STR profiles from single-source or major contributor samples
- Crime scene samples from violent crimes or homicides
- Profiles with a reasonable expectation of relevance to an investigation
We’ll review your case to determine eligibility and guide you through the next steps.
With Sorenson Forensics, you get a partner who understands the CODIS process from beginning to end. Contact us to find out if your case qualifies for CODIS upload or to learn more about our CODIS services.
